REPORT CONTENT
What is included in the report?
ARC provides a custom-made map to illustrate the catchment area based on the ZIP codes it encompasses. Every report automatically includes an Origin Analysis with three unique measurements: 1) a summary of your airport’s true originating traffic based on the ticket point-of-sale; 2) an analysis of the origin of every ticket sold by agencies within your defined catchment area; 3) an analysis of the retention/leakage rates for your airport and your selected alternative airports, based on the ticket point-of-sale. Additionally, optional Destination Analysis modules are available if desired. Each module displays the true O&D traffic for your airport compared to your alternative airports based on the ticket point-of-sale.
Does ARC data reflect passenger traffic from low-cost carriers (LCCs)?
Yes. ARC receives ticketing data from nearly all major airlines in the U.S., including what the aviation industry refers to as “legacy carriers” and “low-cost carriers”. In addition, more than 100 foreign flag carriers participate in the ARC settlement system.
Does ARC data include tickets purchased online?
ARC data
does
represent tickets sold through major retail travel Web sites. However, it
does not
include data from tickets purchased directly from carrier Web sites.
Does ARC adjust its data to reflect total traffic?
No. However, ARC utilizes 100% of the traffic documents that are processed through its settlement system, an estimated 180 million tickets per year. This data is particularly useful due to its timely release – one month after the initial departure date on a ticket. And, because it is competitively priced, it is a valuable data source to cross-reference with other published sources, such as the Department of Transportation DB1B 10% sample.
Does the data represent ALL passengers originating from my airport?
The purpose of the ARC Airport Catchment Report is to analyze ticketing behavior specific to the true originating airport of a passenger trip in order to measure – as best as possible – local demand for air travel and airport selection. Therefore, passengers on connecting or return segments of an itinerary departing from a specified airport are not included in the analysis.
Is the report data based on booked or flown data?
The ARC data warehouse, ARC COMPASS®, is unique in that it represents ticketed and financially settled air transactions, which is an intermediary step that falls between the travel booking and the actual travel event. Based on changes reported to ARC by travel agents including refunded and exchanged tickets, ARC is able to closely approximate a passenger’s intended travel, even though actual flown information is not provided.
How large is ARC’s data sample?
ARC reports 100% of the traffic documents that are processed through the ARC settlement system. The percentage of an airport’s overall traffic will vary depending on the carriers offering service from that airport and their level of participation with ARC. However, based on a comparison of ARC tickets to FAA reported enplanements, our analysis shows that ARC data significantly exceeds the DB1B 10% sample for approximately 90% of the primary commercial service airports in the U.S. For more than 60% of these airports, the ARC volume exceeds 50% of total reported traffic.
Does ARC use the passenger ZIP code to determine their “true” origin?
No. Although ideal, the ZIP code of the passenger is not available to ARC, nor is it a required field on the PNR record. Instead, ARC uses the ZIP code of the travel agency/corporate travel department that issued the ticket as a proxy for the passenger’s point of origin. This is similar to the methodology used by other data providers. Typically, the highest proportion of tickets issued by an agency will originate from one or more local/regional airports.
Can ARC provide analysis of the factors causing leakage at my airport?
Although not included in the basic report, ARC may be able to provide additional ad-hoc analyses, including the examination of average fares, departure windows, and itinerary details from your airport and your selected alternative airports. For more information, please contact ARC’s product manager, Mark Sapiano, at +1 703.341.1019.
DATA AVAILABILITY
How quickly is the data available?
Data for this report is distributed as early as the month immediately following the departure date on the first coupon of a ticket. For example, if a trip originated on January 31, 2006, the data would be reported on or after February 15, 2006 for a monthly subscription. Quarterly subscribers would receive the data on or after April 15, 2006.
How frequently is the data provided?
All purchased reports include 12 months of data, which is available on three delivery frequencies: monthly subscription; quarterly subscription; or a one-time report.
DATA USES
Can ARC data tell me which carriers or agencies are responsible for leakage in my catchment area?
No. ARC has agreements with both its participating carriers and accredited entities that prohibit it from disclosing information pertaining to the individual sales (tickets and fares) of its stakeholders. All data provided is aggregated so as not to reveal the individual identity of a carrier or agency.
My airport has already received a catchment analysis. Why should I buy this report?
The dynamics of air travel are constantly changing, and require regular monitoring in order for airport managers to make strategically sound business decisions. The ARC Airport Catchment Report provides airport managers with the ability to continuously monitor the ticketing behavior within their catchment area in order to spot trends as they’re developing, and to provide relevant and timely information to assist in their marketing and air service development initiatives.
I don’t have a leakage problem at my airport. Why should I buy this report?
The ARC Airport Catchment Report is not limited to identifying passenger leakage. It can also provide an excellent baseline analysis of ticketing behavior within a local market area in order to better understand how specific distribution channels, such as online agencies, factor into an airport’s true originating traffic. This information can help focus marketing campaigns and outreach programs.
I’m using a consultant to provide me with reports already.
If your budget permits, ARC strongly encourages that you use ARC as an additional source of data in order to make comparisons and more fully understand the dynamics of your local market. Consultants can purchase the ARC Airport Catchment Report on behalf of their airport client.
