ARC'S DECEMBER AND YEAR-END 2002 OPERATING STATISTICS REFLECT A STRUGGLING INDUSTRY
Arlington, VA January 16, 2003 - ARC has released its December 2002 monthly processing statistics along with year-end totals for 2002. Total carrier sales by ARC accredited travel agents and CTDs ended 2002 at $64,129,101,000, which is eight percent below 2001 totals. While it may be noted that 2002 reflects an entire year subject to the aftereffects of the 9-11 disasters, the most recent month's results are less than encouraging. Comparing sales of December 2001 - a post 9-11 month which totaled $4.5 billion dollars in sales - to December 2002 - a full year later - sales were down by three percent. This follows three consecutive months of relative growth year over year.
Focusing on fares, readers may note that international fares, while well below the 2000 year-end total, actually compare favorably to the end of last year while domestic fares end the year eleven percent below what they were a year ago.
ARC ends the year as a fully electronic system with electronic reporting being the exclusive means for weekly agent and CTD sales reporting. Electronic ticketing rose sharply during 2002, which begun at 64 percent of total agent ticketing in January and concluded the year at 80 percent of total agent ticketing.
